Love Hearts

What Makes the Love Heart a Wonderful Symbol?

The heart is a universal symbol of love. It represents everything that depicts peace and unity between couples or togetherness between two parties. The love heart is indeed one of the most common icons in the world that means a single thing for others and means a lot to millions. Why has it become a powerful and meaningful emblem? This is mainly because it is generally associated with both emotional and spiritual feelings. It is also encrypted in the minds of many that a love heart’s content are divine thus making it a very popular symbolism.

Love is a wonderful feeling and what better way to express it than from your heart. For this reason, many objects such as decors, giveaways, jewelries, shirt prints, and tattoos are designed in the shape of a heart. These objects become even more popular during Valentine’s Day, weddings, and anniversaries. The love heart is indeed a wonderful symbol because it looks simple yet entails a lot of powerful meanings. The great thing about using the love heart as a sign is that it can immediately deliver a single message.

Before and even today, the love heart is known to be the seat of the human mind. It was also believed to refer to emotional, moral, spiritual, and intellectual core of man. As the symbol became universal it has been continuously used as something that poetically refers to the soul. Many might not know this but the love heart has already been used as a common symbol since the 7th century BC in Cyrene. It was still colored red and is drawn in a stylized shaped which is actually not depicting a human heart.

Another reason why the love heart is a wonderful symbol is that it poses many controversies. The name of the symbol itself is a big deal to many because it does not even depict an organ that pumps blood which is the heart. Others claim it to be an ironic symbol because it sort of represents the buttocks, pubic mound, and even the vulva. History also notes that the love heart originated from the shape of a silphium plant’s seed which is an herbal contraceptive. Whatever people view it, the heart is still an ancient symbol that signifies a soul filled with love.

The evolution of the love heart has become phenomenal. The icon revolutionized the world from fashion to religion. In fashion, love hearts have been used as stylish prints in underwear, shirts, jeans, and even hats. The shape is also used as jewelry designs. On the other hand, it is used as a religious symbol as in the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate heart of Mary. However, besides the classical definition of the symbol which is love, it can also mean sadness, hatred, or pain. The broken love heart and the black heart are common representations of broken or sad relationships. Regardless of what a person think a love heart means, it is still widely considered as a wonderful symbol because of the variety of things it depicts.
